On August 18, 1960, a satellite named CORONA was launched into space from
a remote Air Force base in California. Believed by the public to be part of
the Discoverer scientific research program, the CORONA was, in fact, the
world's first spy satellite - a top secret, space-based reconnaissance
camera.
Over the next twelve years, more than 100 CORONAs were shot into orbit.
Their mission: to photograph the Soviet Union, China, the Middle East and
other areas that airplanes could not enter, looking for warnings of war and
nuclear proliferation.
The CORONA story is a unique blend of engineering and espionage, where
driven men accomplished incredible technological feats back when vacuum
tubes were 'high tech' and space flight was viewed by many as being flatly
impossible.
SECRET SATELLITE shows its viewers how the seemingly incomprehensible
technology that drives current space hardware was built on a nuts and bolts
foundation. The trial and error story of CORONA, which paid off with
spectacular success, is filled with drama, humor, and humanity.
