- Operation Noah
The environment today has
to be managed in order to be protected and one of the tools available in
the environmental management is the capture and translocation of animals.
Operation Noah was Africa's earliest large scale animal capture project,
initiated by the building of one of the world's largest man-made lakes in
1956. In this video production, engrossing black and white footage,
chronicles how some 6000 animals were eventually saved from the rising
waters of Lake Kariba.
- Rhino Translocation
An insatiable demand for
horn, combined with organized commercial poaching has pushed the rhino to
the brink of extinction. A policy to translocate the few remaining rhino
left in the wilderness areas to intensive protection zones has been
implemented by the Zimbabwean dept of National Parks and Wildlife
Management with the aid of donor conservation agencies. The idea behind
the intensive protection zones is not only to afford better protection
against poaching but also to form viable breeding populations. Rhino
translocation: last chance for survival.
- Elephant and buffalo
capture
The Save conservancy was
established in the sout-east lowveld of Zimbabwe by a group of cattle
ranchers who pooled their land, resources and experience to for an 800,000
acre game reserve. With a policy to return the region to its original
pristine condition, the conservancy will become one of the largest game
reserves in the world. The restocking of wildlife is an important part of
the process and two key species targeted for reintroduction are the
elephant and buffalo. This fascinating footage documents how Wildlife
Management Services, a game capture unit, attempt to capture and
translocate fully grown elephant from the Gona reZhou National Park and
buffalo from the Matesi region, to the Save Conservancy.
