Watson T. Yoshimoto, a native Hawaiian, collected all sixteen major
varieties of the world’s wild sheep and most of the many types of goats,
ibex, bears, antelopes, and antlered game of Asia, Europe, North America,
South America, and the South Pacific . . . as well as the African Big Five.
Follow Yoshi as he finds himself cut off from safety when the ice separates
while he is hunting polar bears off the Russian coast. Experience his hunts
for bharal at 18,000 feet in the Himalayas; tigers, gaurs, and wild Asian
buffalo in India; an elephant with ivory weighing 127 and 123 pounds in
Tanzania; and a near-world-record giant eland from the C.A.R. Yoshi visited
many countries multiple times just because he liked the destinations or
animals. He has collected all spiral-horned antelope, including many
outstanding trophies of this tribe. His safari days go back to the 1950s
when Yoshi had his rifles and supplies placed in huge wooden crates and
shipped ahead via boat to East Africa, certainly a different era and time!
All his life he shot with just two rifles: a .300 Weatherby and a .458
Winchester. When Yoshi ended a half century of hunting in 1995 at age 86, he
had taken nearly 200 species of big game in forty-three countries on six
continents. Along the way he earned the respect of his peers and was awarded
hunting’s highest achievement, the coveted Weatherby Award. His extensive
big-game collection is now on display at the National Science Museum at Ueno
Park in Tokyo. This is an interesting and highly readable book about the
life of one of the best-known trophy hunters of the twentieth century.
