Leo Kröger was born in 1912 in Khabarovsk, a town on the
Amur River in the Russian Far East, the son of a German father and a Russian mother. As he
says in the opening of his book, "this [being born in Siberia in 1912] condemned me
to savor two great wars, a multitude of revolutions, the Soviet occupation in Manchuria,
the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, Nazism, communism, apartheid, and the atomic
bomb." He has lived and hunted in Siberia, Manchuria, China, England, Germany, and
since 1953 Mozambique. He has hunted and fished in even more countries. This is the story
of his hunting life--with emphasis on his life of hunting in Africa--told in wonderful
anecdotes that are at times warm, personal, witty, and above all humorous. It is the story
of a lifelong passion for hunting and wingshooting; it is the story of the relationship
between a man and his dog, and between the man and his guns; it is also the story of the
assorted characters, and there were many, who accompanied him on the frozen marshes of
Siberia as well as in the blistering forests of Mozambique. Leo Kroger has led an
