have seen the author coming in search of great hunting and trophy animals.
With the exception perhaps of certain professional hunters, there are not
many men who have hunted throughout Zimbabwe and South Africa more than
this author. In addition, Michael Callender is one of the few South
Africans that have ventured to the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan and the
Canadian artic in quest of adventure. His hunts for Marco Polo sheep and
polar bear provide an interesting contrast to his numerous quests for
buffalo(all of the African species), lion, leopard, giant eland, and a
wide collection of other big game trophies. It is not often that European
and American readers are treated to the adventures of a resident South
African international hunter.
Buffalo are one of
Michael's favorite game animals and there are plenty of buffalo hunting
stories in this book. The author was once smashed up by a nyati so he's
able to resonate with those who have had similar mishaps. He's also had
the fleeing flash of a leopard and his lion hunts include one adventure
wherein he was imprisoned as a poacher in Zimbabwe for no other reason
than there was a bureaucratic paperwork
mix-up. Obviously, because the author lives in South Africa, there are
some delightful stories about the Elysian hunting grounds of the Eastern
Cape and other ramblings after plains game.
For those experienced big
game hunters who have hunted for long periods of time without firing a
shot, the author also has some stories to relate that will make you feel
as if you're right with him on the trail. If you've ever gotten down on a
safari because a lot of time has passed and you haven't seen much game,
Michael has more anecdotes to relate that will make you feel right at home
in his hunting camp. For those who are avid and enthusiastic big game
hunters, as well as for those eager armchair adventurers, each of the 16
chapters in this book will delight readers and collectors alike. They are
well and enthusiastically written by a man who's enjoyed a lifetime of
roaming with a rifle.
