Its stealth, grace and wariness are
legendary. It embodies the concept of nature - of wild things and places. It is beauty to
the casual observer, danger to the highway traveler, challenge to the wildlife manager,
vexation to the crop farmer, trophy to the recreational hunter and photographer - mystery
to all. It is the whit-tailed deer. In military parlance, a white flag is the sign of
surrender. In nature, such a flag signals the sudden departure but certain presence of
whit-tailed deer. Today, as historically, the whitetail has not surrendered to human
population growth and expansion. Instead, it thrives, with wilderness senses and behaviors
intact, and with a tenacity that awes even those most pessimistic about the prospects for
our wildlife resources. |
